Maths

Maths is all around us, so let’s make it fun! At DESS we value the impact of irresistible learning. Our Maths curriculum enables children to build their mathematical understanding and equips them with the tools to enjoy learning and persevere when faced with challenge. We aim to make learning true to life and relevant to all individuals based on their own individual abilities.

It is fundamental that pupils have the confidence to take risks when investigating, solving problems or sharing ideas.

At DESS we use a Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach to help children develop a deeper understanding of Maths. This supports children in gaining a firm grasp of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills in order to become well-rounded mathematicians. 

What can you do to help at home?

• Encourage your child to access the variety of apps available, such as TT Rock Stars and MyMaths.
• Use Maths skills with your child when you're out and about! Ask them to count change and correct money, budget for you, estimate the price of items, work out percentage discounts, estimate distances and measurements, tell the time etc.
• Practice times tables and numbers bonds through songs, counting games etc. Regular practice for short periods of time works best.
